Pierre-Jean Mariette (1694–1774) is the eighteenth-century French collector par excellence. His writings on art and artists are a rich repository for anyone who works on the ancien régime. His collection of drawings is of such fundamental importance to our current conception of artistic authenticity that despite its dispersal in his post-mortem sale of 1775, a catalogue raisonné is still being written (Pierre Rosenberg and Laure Barthélemy-Labeeuw. Les dessins de la collection Mariette: École française (Milan, Mondadori Electa, 2011), with catalogues of drawings from other schools forthcoming). Mariette’s collection of drawings has been the subject of several exhibitions, and has come to define him as a hero-collector. However, as Kristel Smentek convincingly argues, his reputation as a connoisseur did not materialize overnight, and neither did the necessary social status of gentilhomme. What she admirably achieves in this fascinating book is to set in context this best-known and most familiar part of his collecting life.
