To investigate the effects of presentation of pictures on the learning and retention of the readings of words, taking the subjects' familiarity with the words into account, 24 kindergarten children were randomly assigned to the picture condition and the no-picture condition. A pretest was performed to select learning materials (words in Kanji) for each subject, and three high-familiarity words and three low-familiarity words were chosen for each subject. The subjects were given acquisition trials and test trials alternately for ten times, and about one week later a delayed test was given. It was found that the kindergarteners in the no-picture condition learned and recalled more high-familiarity words than those in the picture condition. In the learning and retention of low-familiarity words there were no clear differences between the two conditions. The results were discussed in terms of attentional processes and functions of pictures
