This collective work brings together contributions from anthropologists who specialise in the study of spirit possession within the Himalayan area. Although much of the research presented here was conducted in the framework of a Paris-based project, the contributors themselves are from a range of European countries and North America and address the central concern of this volume from very different perspectives. However, none of the authors is from the part of the world from which these case studies are drawn, reflecting the lack of scholars from this region who undertake the study of these phenomena. The terms of the division between a West that is interested in spirit possession but does not practise it, and an East that does practise it but does not see it as a subject of study, are exposed here
