Boundaries between the four major fields of application of transactional analysis—education, organizational development, psychotherapy, and counseling—are explored. The difficulties in defining boundaries between these fields are presented in terms of efficacy, ethics, and institutional aspects. In the context of this discussion, the author suggests that boundaries between these fields be viewed as envelopes that overlap rather than as exact borders. The importance of goals and contracts in each field is emphasized as are methods of providing clients with protection and permission to change.
