This article describes a five-step model for successful, positive communication in relationships that have been defined as difficult by the client(s). The five steps are: 1) the ten-minute practice, 2) four problem-resolution steps, 3) fantasy and intuition, 4) a non-threatening presentation, and 5) the five steps to end abuse. This model was successfully employed in relationships in which the participants had made therapeutic contracts with one of three goals: an amicable process of separation and divorce, reconciliation of a relationship, or management of issues in a business relationship
