By surveying and analyzing over seventy sources in newspapers, periodicals and magazines about João Octaviano Gonçalves (1892-1962), in addition to discussing more closely a major concert that took place in Rio de Janeiro, in 1926, under the title of Música Psíquica (Psychic Music), the article aims to assess the importance of a musician currently forgotten, but who for decades moved the pages of the press through his activities as a composer, pianist, teacher, conductor and cultural articulator. With a production of about 400 works for varied musical formations (from solo pieces to great symphonies), our hypothesis is that J. Octaviano may have his historical forgetfulness reassessed. Throughout the text, the gestures of “remembering” and “digging” are related to the perspective of “brushing history against the grain” (BENJAMIN, 2013b, p. 13), in an attempt to reveal a character who ended up on the margins of our musical historiography, despite being one of the most active agents in the field of Brazilian concert music during the first half of the 20th century
