Cet article se donne pour objet l’histoire d’une émergence en histoire des techniques. Il retrace comment, en cinquante ans, des années 1970 aux années 2020, le mot « artefact » est devenu un concept, jusqu’à quasiment remplacer la notion d’artifice. Nous verrons que ce changement de paradigme, intimement lié à l’outil informatique, relève d’une double objectivation : objectivation de l’artefact en tant que médiateur cognitif (partie I) ; objectivation de l’artefacture en tant qu’espace d’inscription de formes contemporaines de technicité (partie III). Et, parce qu’elle a existé bien avant son objectivation, je présenterai, dans un temps intermédiaire, les modes d’existence de la pensée artéfactuelle dans les trois grands régimes de technicité : pratique, technique, technologique (partie II)
