Increasing equality in household work

Patterns of time-use change in Norway

Time-budget data are used to analyse changes related to sexual equality in household work. While the development towards greater equality in general is a very slow process, considerable steps in this direction were taken in Norway during the 1970s. The increase in sexual equality was mainly due to a decrease in women's household work. The analysis suggests that a significant part of this change can be explained by structural factors, in particular by the increase in female employment. It is hypothesized, however, that cultural or ideological change might be a more important explanation
