The intelligibility of varieties of English in Japan

This small-scale study investigated the extent to which 37 Japanese speakers of English found different varieties of English to be intelligible. The varieties of English that were investigated were spoken by eight undergraduate and graduate students from Inner Circle and Expanding Circle countries (the US, China, Korea, and Vietnam) at a state university in the US. This study employed a mixed methods approach, including an intelligibility test and a short questionnaire, to measure intelligibility and comprehensibility and to identify possible factors related to both intelligibility and unintelligibility
