The thoughts that occupied the minds of the Earls of Tyrone and Tyrconnell as they prepared to depart from Rathmullan on 14 September 1607 remain a mystery, caught as they were between the forces holding them in Ireland and those drawing them to Europe. Until his death in Rome in 1616, Hugh O’Neill, Earl of Tyrone, like many other ‘exiles’, lived with the ebb and flow of circumstances that altered the likelihood of his return. The power vacuum created by the Flight was eventually filled by the Plantation of Ulster, which acted like a magnet in offering a huge landed resource to new immigrants, especially those whose potential for upward social mobility and material success in their homelands was restricted. In Ireland they would be drawn to the most favourable niches for settlement. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
