The theory of cultural transmission, as applied to education, lacks an adequate account of principles of interpretation. Hermeneutics, the philosophy of interpretation, has much to offer toward meeting this need. As a specific example, the philosophy of Michael Polanyi is used to critique recent theoretical work by Frederick O. Gearing. While many of Gearing's ideas are fundamentally sound, several inadequacies are identified. An expansion of Gearing's model of transaction is offered and education is redefined in a new light
