This article examines the role of selected educational institutions in reproducing the distinctive cultural practice of a socially subordinate class in a complex society. Industrial and public service workers in the city of Sheffield, England, participate in a broad range of educational activities that contribute positively to the extended reproduction of a working class culture. Why this contribution is positive and the comparative relevance of the Sheffield data are examined also
