The indirect side-effects of economic development in underdeveloped areas constitute a problem of considerable importance in planning any type of aid programs. In this paper, we try to document a case in which economic development has led to personality change in the children of a developing community. Specifically, our purpose is to describe an "experiment" which explored the relationship in a "natural laboratory" between the presence or absence of adult male models, and sex-typed behavior in young males. The experiment was initiated when, in the course of conducting a change study on the island of Great Abaco in the Out Island Bahamas, a community was discovered in which the majority of adult males were regularly absent from their households and their community for over six months of the year. It was felt that such a situation, in severely restricting the number and range of models present in the environment of the young males of the community, should have ramifications pertinent to their achievement of male sexual identifications. Determination of some of these ramifications became the specific task of the experiment
