This article introduces a special issue of Man dedicated to indigenous psychologies. It argues for the importance of anthropological studies of the self and personhood, challenging Western psychological assumptions about the universality of individualistic conceptions of self. The authors suggest that understanding indigenous concepts of self requires examining their embeddedness within specific social and cultural contexts, including kinship systems, ritual practices, and cosmological beliefs. The articles in the issue explore diverse cultural perspectives on the self, highlighting the relational and interconnected nature of personhood in many non-Western societies. The introduction emphasizes the need for a more nuanced and culturally sensitive approach to the study of psychology, recognizing the diversity of human experience and the limitations of Western psychological models
