The Visual Imperative of the Genealogical Diagram

Depuis les travaux de Rivers, une grande partie des etudes de la parente a ete consacree a la production de schemas permettant de visualiser les relations genealogiques de maniere systematique et comparable. Les anthropologues considerent le diagramme comme un resume graphique dont le statut theorique est rarement pris en consideration. L'A., au contraire, examine la dimension visuelle des differents types d'arbres genealogiques europeens qui ont precede le diagramme genealogique. La transformation du pedigre en genealogie operee par Rivers s'est appuyee sur l'importance diffuse de l'arbre comme illustration des proprietes taxinomiques dans la culture europeenne. Darwin se sert du pedigre pour exprimer la phylogenie, qui trouve son expression graphique par les mains de Haeckel. La reconstruction calviniste de la genealogie du Christ fait d'abord remonter sa lignee ascendante jusqu'a Adam, puis en vient a inclure les premiers arbres de Jesse. L'A. montre que si les diagrammes genealogiques retracent la parente dans un cadre ethnographique, ils doivent leur nuance morale et leur puissance visuelle a ces predecesseurs sacres, scientifiques ou seculaires
