It was the purpose of this exploratory study to examine if extended family ties are an important factor in determining the access of individuals in a kibbutz to positions of power and influence as well as to other privileges and rewards. Specifically, we investigated the possible differential allocation of the following factors: central positions in the kibbutz, usage of kibbutz vehicles, and support for studies outside the kibbutz. Data were collected from four veteran kibbutzim for the period of 19691978, using primarily kibbutz records as our source of information. Our data show that, in two of the kibbutzim, members of extended families are in an advantageous position, while, in the other two, they are not. A central conclusion of the study is that the proportion of extended family members in a kibbutz's population cannot in itself account for members' power and influence. It is suggested that the interaction between the power structure of the kibbutz and the patterns of familial organization and operation should be studied
