Si certaines publications ethnomusicologiques recentes ont aborde les questionnements reflexifs sur la pratique ethnographique, des perspectives sur le travail de terrain du point de vue des chercheurs qui etudient leur propre culture sont rares. L'A. suggere que les ethnomusicologues qui pratiquent une ethnologie du proche - au sens d'une recherche de terrain dans sa propre culture, et sur une tradition musicale que l'on pratiquait deja avant d'en faire un terrain de recherche - devraient examiner de maniere plus precise la nature specifique de leur position et de leur experience. Il affirme notamment que son experience anterieure en tant que musicien a ete plus difficile a traduire en termes academiques que les observations ulterieures realisees en tant que chercheur. Selon l'A., la connaissance acquise a travers ces experiences est egalement de nature differente de celle acquise par la pratique ethnographique. L'A. illustre son propos a partir de son experience de la musique d'ensemble taiwanaise nanguan, mettant notamment en evidence les differences, dans la relation ethnographique, entre ethnologue exterieur et ethnologue autochtone
