Funk carioca is a one of the largest cultural manifestations of Brazil and is fundamentally related to the lifestyles and experiences of youth from Rio de Janeiro's periphery and slums, known as favelas.Funk carioca is a hybrid performance resulting from an intense process of appropriation, commodification and nationalization of African Diaspora rhythms.Whereas identities are linguistic constructions, which is to say that identities are performances, the aim of this research is to investigate how the speech acts that define the meanings of race, gender and territory constitute the identity of funk carioca.Situated in a transdisciplinary field, this study combines linguistic analysis and ethnography.Through some backstage experience in funk carioca, but also through an interpretation of speech acted out on stage, this work shows how funk carioca proposes a new reading of the social map of Rio de Janeiro, which challenges a veiled racism in Brazilian society and reinvents new identities of race and gender
