Unusual color categories in non-Western languages appear to support the doctrine of linguistic relativity. However, the universalist hypothesis of color-category evolution can specify the degree to which an unexpected system departs from constraints that are imposed by visual neurology. Although universalists and relativists are locked in debate, the current data demonstrate that both schools contribute to an overview on the relation between perception and language
