This paper argues that the common denominator of topic–comment (TC) constructions in natural languages is not a single functional feature (e.g. aboutness) but rather the fact that they share some salient semantic attri-butes with prototypical examples of TC. The paper tries to disentangle these prototypical semantic attributes of TC and then shows, mainly refer-ring to examples from German, that diVerent TC constructions are charac-terized by diVerent combinations of these attributes and therefore cannot be analyzed properly by unitary theories of TC function. 1
