NÖEL Carroll's The Philosophy of Motion Pictures is both less and more than the introductory text it purports to be: less, because it does not present the full range of topics and complete array of alternative positions on them that an introductory text needs; but also a lot more, because it is a pretty comprehensive introduction to Carroll's own, highly influential work on the philosophy of film. Carroll's previous efforts have mostly been published in numerous articles over the past three decades. So, although the book is thus not especially suited to introductory courses in the philosophy of film, it is nonetheless a very welcome addition to this burgeoning field of research, for it provides the synoptic account of Carroll's views on the philosophy of film that previously had been lacking. As such, I expect it to be the subject of continuing discussion among philosophers of film for some time to come
