This work is a general consideration on geography from the professional point of view, starting, as a way to achieve this aim, from a contextual analysis of Jean Gottmann's work and life. The use of primary sources (letters, interviews), the accurate analysis of his texts and their comparison with another expressive ones produced at the same time, the reconstruction of the political context and the material conditions of production, were some of the most used procedures. In the study of his work, it was evident some of the transformations that went through the geographical knowledge and the profession of geographer, such as the questioning and devaluation of the French regional method, its instrument of work par excellence. It was also evident that personal motivations, labor demands, and political affiliations can account for the whole of the same work, regardless of its scientific value, which was definitely his case. The work attempts to contribute by bringing together elements that contribute with historiographic reconstructions to the geography as a discipline, while also want to serve as a guide to access the production and ideas of this geographer especifically. The general scope, however, was to gather elements to question the evolution of geography as a profession since its birth in the late 19th century, until the first decades after the end of World War II
