This work analyzes some of the main theoretical explanations about the socioeconomic determinants for the crimes of theft and robbery, giving an important analytical focus to the role of unemployment, poverty and cultural values. It performs an Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression analysis, with panel data with State and year variables, to assess the relationship between a set of representative independent variables and the robbery-homicide rates. Then, it sought to extrapolate the results obtained connecting it to some of the more current and sophisticated theoretical formulations about the impact of modernization and economic development on the employment structure and, consequently, on property crimes
