Cet article propose une revue de la littérature sociologique qui s'est penchée sur la théorisation du processus d'intégration des immigrés et de leurs descendants depuis plus d'un siècle aux États-Unis. Il commence par présenter le paradigme classique - dont les racines remontent à l'École de Chicago - qui conçoit le processus comme une convergence individuelle des caractéristiques des migrants et de leurs descendants vers celles des natifs. L'objectif de l'article est de montrer comment les sociologues américains n'ont cessé de déconstruire ce paradigme dont les connotations ethnocentriques sont plus ou moins explicites selon les auteurs. Cette déconstruction s'est faite données empiriques à l'appui, en mobilisant notamment des preuves de production, de reproduction et de persistance des inégalités liées à l'origine ethnique ou raciale. L'article se termine par les théories sociologiques les plus récentes qui tentent de reconstruire une conception dynamique de l'intégration des immigrés en insistant sur les rapports entre groupes et sur la notion de frontières ethniques
