Click to increase image sizeClick to decrease image sizeWhile studies of proletarianization generally deal with heads of families, the social biography on which this study is based allows us to examine how a variety of disciplinary mechanisms—educational, emplyment-related, religious and familial—proletarianize both young workers and students, and how these mechanisms operate by creating spontaneous communities: in the case, a football men. The mechanisms are analyzed through the double character of sporting activities: the more or less explicit discourse on sport and the strategy of each participant to use the group in order to further his participation in other groups. This analysis reveals the process of demarcation which determines that some will participate in thispartticular restricted working-class society which develops around oil and that others will remain outside it. These mechanisms, operating within the group, have an influence also in the functioning of institutions such as PEMEX, the oil-workers' union and the municipal administration, which are organized less to promote an increase in labour productivity than to contribute to an effort of »moral hygiene« conceived as a means of controlling the »dangerous classes
