Following Jesper Juul’s study in The Art of Failure, we try to broaden the comprehension of art and negative emotions related to the failure in video games, and to offer some reasoning regarding the paradox of failure that may not be that paradoxal after all. First of all, we examine what characterizes the art of video games. Moreover, we present some types of failure and its relation with the player’s experience. We then analyze four video games in how they can elicit a variety of intense negative emotions through failure. We conclude with an overview on how these negative emotions are compensated with a positive artistic experience
