its privileging of Shakespeare's plays as a sort of apolitical high art, the book's view of Elizabethan culture is somewhat out of place within current critical debates, especially those dealing with popular culture and the place of carnivalesque traditions within it. Yet Laroque reminds us, compellingly, how pervasive and multifaceted those traditions were. Although his argument is, in some respects, disappointing, as a source-book Shakespeare's Festive World is invaluable
