What are the goals of pupils ? How do pupils see educational streams and jobs ? These questions are constantly raised by guidance counsellors. In order to provide some aspects of an answer, the research department of I.N.E.T.O.P. undertook a questionnaire survey in February-March 1992. Questions designed to evaluate the goals of pupils and the amount of thought given to such occupational goals and the amount of thought given to such aims. Pupils were also asked to express their preference among 8 major groups of activities. In order to discern the representation of educational streams, pupils were asked to estimate the prestige of a series of programmes at very different levels and to characterise a number of them with regard to several dimensions : academic demands, possibility of continued studies, openings provided, amount of work required, suitability in relation to sex of the individual. The same approach was used to evaluate the prestige of 29 occupations corresponding to various levels of qualifications. A more analytical study investigated the representation of 8 jobs according to the following 8 dimensions : job safety, masculinity /feminity, possibilities of contacts, openings, income, free time and freedom at work. The jobs chosen were the same in 4th and final years. Finally, pupils were asked to project themselves into the future, indicating the extent to which each proposal of a series of fifty corresponded to their vision of themselves at the age of 25
