The distance education movement in North America is growing in size and prestige. The lack of immediate two‐way interaction, which characterizes many distance‐education programs, appears inimical to the aims of foreign‐language teaching. In this article, it is argued that distance technologies, viewed from the perspective ofKrashen's Input Hypothesis, are capable of providing student‐friendly foreign‐language teaching. An overview of the present state of distance education is presented, along with suggestions for profession‐wide dialogue on this powerful channel for instruction
