An archaeological data recovery program was conducted at 32DU2, the Midipadi Butte site, in eastern Dunn County, North Dakota, for the Omaha District, Corps of Engineers. At least two distinct cultural components are represented in the material recovered. A Besant complex, Woodland tradition component (ca. A.D. 1-800) is suggested on the basis of a Besant projectile point, cordroughened pottery, and previous testing data. The most visible and well-documented component is a Knife River phase, Plains Village tradition village. Oral tradition and the recovered artifact assemblage indicate this village was occupied early in the Historic period, ca. A.D. 1781-1815. The site is located within the traditional territory of the Hidatsa-proper, and they probably occupied the village. Additional evidence suggests that after the village was abandoned, the site was repeatedly reused as a hunting camp
