Cet article se propose d'explorer le fonctionnement des magnet schools et se penche sur la question de la diversite raciale. Les auteurs commencent tout d'abord par effectuer un bilan de la recherche sur ces ecoles en terme de comprehension et d'evaluation de l'impact qu'elles ont eu dans le processus de reduction de la segregation raciale. Cette analyse fournit une appreciation differente des resultats selon le contexte, intra-scolaire ou communautaire. Elle est suivie des resultats d'une etude de 3 ans portant sur des ecoles de ce type dans de grandes agglomerations urbaines, a St-Louis et Cincinnati
