itself need to be controlled? No! argue many scientists. One simply sets up a tight experimental design, controlling for all variables other than the one under study. The independent variable (treatment) is carefully defined. The experimental group receives the treatment and the control group receives no treatment. Any differences in the dependent variable between the groups are due to the presence or absence of the independent variable. However, most educational researchers realize that instructional methods studies are not that simple. One cannot compare an experimental instructional method against no method as a control group, as this would not answer the research question. Conventionally the control group is instructed by an existing or established method already well defined. The experiment takes the form of comparing a new instructional method against an old method.
