  • Diffraction in Textiles-Based Community Craft Groups

    Open Access•Kate Bowen-Viner, Debbie L Watson et al.•ARTICLE•TEXTILE•2025

Textile-based community crafts are often described as an intervention for bringing people together, improving social connectedness and reducing loneliness. This article draws on Barad’s (2007) method/concept of diffraction to offer a different way of understanding connection and belonging in textile-based community craft groups. In doing so, it considers how artefacts of sewing contributed to the emergence of connections and a sense of belonging …

  • As táticas do intérprete de língua de sinais diante do vazio lexical

Open Access•Daniel Giles, Sophie Pointurier Pournin et al.•ARTICLE•Belas Infiéis•2019

  • Ethnic Speech and Ethnic Action as Ethnic Behavior

    O Gaine, Stanley O Gaines et al.•ARTICLE•Identity•2016

This study sought to validate the Brunel Ethnic Behavior Inventory (BEBI) as a measure of two aspects of “doing” (i.e., ethnic speech and ethnic action) among the “ways of ethnicity” identified by Verkuyten. It also evaluates the construct validity of the BEBI alongside the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure-Revised (MEIM-R) and evaluates the BEBI and the MEIM-R (the latter of which measures exploration as “thinking” and commitment as “feeling” a…

  • Ethnic Speech and Ethnic Action as Ethnic Behavior

    O Gaine, Stanley O Gaines et al.•ARTICLE•Identity•2016

This article reports the construction of a new survey—specifically, the Brunel Ethnic Behavior Inventory (BEBI)—designed to measure ethnic speech and ethnic action as separate, yet related, aspects of individuals’ ethnic behavior. Using Tajfel’s social identity theory as a conceptual frame of reference, this study sought an answer to the research question of how many factors actually are measured by the BEBI, and tested the hypothesis that a two-…

  • Lexical decisions and related cognitive issues in spoken and signed language interpreting

Laurie Swabey, Brenda Nicodemus et al.•ARTICLE•Interpreting International…•2016•Cited by: 5

This study examined omissions, errors, and variability in lexical selection across simultaneous interpretations of President Obama’s 2009 inaugural address, in three spoken languages (French, German, Japanese) and in American Sign Language (ASL). Microanalysis of how information conveyed by 39 source speech lexical items was transferred into the target languages assessed to what extent omissions and errors reflected differences in lexical structu…

    Open Access•Daniel Giles, Daniel Gile•ARTICLE•Meta Journal des traducteurs•2005•Cited by: 2•References: 17

Open Access•Daniel Giles, Daniel Gile•ARTICLE•Meta Journal des traducteurs•2002•Cited by: 1

Translation errors are analyzed on the basis of an operational translation Model. They can be classified either according to their location in the Model's components (knowledge base, hypothesis formulation, plausibility, fidelity and acceptability tests), or according to functional criteria. Isolation and explicitation strategies help locate their sources. Two practical strategies are suggested for remedial action against errors arising from weak…

Open Access•Daniel Giles, Daniel Gile•ARTICLE•Meta Journal des traducteurs•2002•Cited by: 1

As an awareness-heightening exercise, taped speeches containing proper nouns were played back to two groups of 7 interpretation students at ISIT: members of a group A were instructed to listen carefully in view of a consecutive interpretation of the speeches and to note down any names and figures. Members of group B were instructed to listen carefully and take notes in preparation for consecutive interpretation. The numbers of names correctly not…

Open Access•Daniel Giles, Daniel Gile•ARTICLE•Meta Journal des traducteurs•2002•Cited by: 2

Open Access•Daniel Giles, Daniel Gile•ARTICLE•Meta Journal des traducteurs•2002•Cited by: 1

Translation (I/T) constraints reveal that the feeling of "comprehension" is relative and depends on functional requirements, on linguistic familiarity and on a psychological comfort threshold. Translators are aware of the importance of extra-linguistic knowledge and of the intrinsic ambiguity of language. The comprehension of specialized texts by Translators can be modeled using semantic net-like structures. Production is revealed to be a difficu…
