Did It Happen Here: Perspectives on Fascism and America
Three Rival Versions of Theological Genealogy: Catholicism, Left Hegelianism and Post-Secularism
In this paper I would like to discuss three rival versions of theological genealogy that are popular today. In doing so I seek to offer a few examples of how the most recent scholarly turn to theology is ultimately being driven by disparate political ideologies. The first one I describe as new Catholic modernity critiques, which often emphasize the breakdown of moral consensus brought on by Protestantism, theological nominalism, etc. The second a…
What Are the Politics of Ahmed's What Is Islam
This review looks at how Shahab Ahmed engages with history, political elitism, secularism, and anthropology in his book What Is Islam? The Importance of Being Islamic
May 1968 and its Legacy: Introduction
Scholars, politicians and intellectuals continue to debate the meaning and legacy of 68 for today, as evidenced by the numerous conferences that took place in 2018 in light of the fiftieth anniversary of the May events. This special discussion in The Tocqueville Review emerged from such a conference, which took place on June 9, 2018 through the Center for Critical Democratic Studies at the American University of Paris. Four contributions by Wim W…
The Neoconservative Moment in France: Raymond Aron, the United States, and the 1970s
This article tries to place the liberal thought of Raymond Aron during the 1970s in a transatlantic context. Doing so, it argues, allows for a better understanding of Aron's liberalism during the so-called French liberal revival that occurred during this decade. Aron, it shows, was critical of much of the turn to liberalism during this time in France, and in particular the appeal that international human rights had for former French Marxists turn…

Introduction: Special Forum on Christianity and Human Rights
Introduction: Special Forum on Christianity and Human Rights Udi Greenberg and Daniel Steinmetz-Jenkins KEY WORDS Christianity, human rights, Catholicism, Protestantism, intellectual history The intellectual roots of human rights have been a source of much debate, but Christianity’s role in shaping the language of universal equality has been especially controversial. Historians agree that prominent Catholic philosophers, such as Jacques Maritain,…
The Many Liberalisms of Serge Audier
The French philosopher Serge Audier has perhaps become the leading authority on the history of liberalism in France. However, he is largely unknown in the United States. This article attempts to provide the first critical overview of Audier's work in English. It does so by suggesting that the major aim of Audier's work is to revive a forgotten strand of social liberalism in France. The article illustrates this by looking at Audier's writings on t…
Stanley Hoffmann's Critique of Hans Morgenthau's Political Realism
This article begins by arguing that Raymond Aron's interest in the burgeoning field of international relations theory was fundamentally motivated by the attempt to provide an alternative to Hans Morgenthau's Politics Among Nations. Throughout his book Paix et guerre Aron expressed a consistent worry that Morgenthau's political realism was too influenced by a dangerous strain of German power politics which he identified with the thought of Carl Sc…

The Future of Illusion: Political Theology and Early Modern Texts/Minding the Modern: Human Agency, Intellectual Traditions, and Responsible Knowledge
It is difficult to know when the recent ‘academic turn to religion’ commenced but it at least dates back to September 11. It is by no accident that the meaning of the term is inseparable from schol

Between two rights: Julien Freund and the origins of political realism in France
Julien Freund (1921–93) was a French sociologist and political theorist who taught at the University of Strasbourg in the 1960s and 1970s. Although he is the author of over two dozen books, Freund remained throughout his lifetime something of a marginal figure in his own country. Yet, strangely, Freund is now receiving more scholarly attention in France than ever before. The question is why? This paper attempts to provide an answer by looking at …
Michael Oakeshott's Theological Genealogy of Political Modernity
This essay attempts to provide a historical account of Michael Oakeshott’s famous distinction between civil and enterprise association. As such, it demonstrates that Oakeshott’s political skepticism and his concomitant view of civil association can in part be explained by his reliance on Augustinian theology. In a similar vein, Oakeshott’s linkage of enterprise association with the rationalism of Bacon must be considered in terms of Oakeshott’s u…
Jan Assmann and the Theologization of the Political
This paper focuses in part on Jan Assmann's interpretation and refutation of Carl Schmitt's very well-known secularization theory that all significant modern concepts of the state are secularized theological notions. It will be demonstrated that Assmann attempts to counter Schmitt's conception of modern secularization by suggesting that Mosaic monotheism inaugurated a revolution by theologizing the political. By briefly exploring Assmann's interp…
