  • Technology Makers as De Facto Work Designers in American Healthcare

Open Access•Deepa Kylasam Iyer, Ayaj Rana et al.•ARTICLE•Work and Occupations•2026

Artificial intelligence (AI) usually enters organizations as a tool whose work-design implications appear only after implementation. This study shifts the analytic starting point upstream to examine how healthcare AI “makers,” through market-facing narratives, frame AI as suitable for adoption in a regulated, professionally governed field. We ask how technology makers construct and legitimate work-design scripts before organizational implementati…

  • What do unions do… for temps? Collective bargaining and the wage penalty

Open Access•Adam Seth Litwin, Or Shay•ARTICLE•Industrial Relations A Journal of…•2022

Does collective bargaining lift wages for contingent workers? Well‐worn theory suggests that temps at a covered employer earn less than otherwise similar “perms,” but still fare better than they would in a nonunion workplace. Our analysis of a national sample of matched employee–employer data first disposes of the universality of this conventional wisdom. Then, it allows us to test an alternative, contingent theory of the mitigating impact of col…

  • Paying the Price for a Broken Healthcare System: Rethinking Employment, Labor, and Work in a Post-Pandemic World

    Open Access•Amos Avgar, Adrienne E Eaton et al.•ARTICLE•Work and Occupations•2020•Cited by: 3

Even before the word pandemic reentered the lexicon, pressures stemming from institutional and technological change challenged policymakers and provider organizations to rethink core features of the manner in which we deliver healthcare. This essay introduces a special issue devoted to the consequences of change on the healthcare sector's varied stakeholders. It does so in the context of our eventual, post-coronavirus reemergence and a renewed in…

  • Superbugs versus Outsourced Cleaners: Employment Arrangements and the Spread of Health Care-Associated Infections

Open Access•Adam Seth Litwin, Amos Avgar et al.•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 42

On any given day, about one in 25 hospital patients in the United States has a health care-associated infection (HAI) that the patient contracts as a direct result of his or her treatment. Fortunately, the spread of most HAIs can be halted through proper disinfection of surfaces and equipment. Consequently, cleaners-"environmental services" (EVS) in hospital parlance-must take on the important task of defending hospital patients (as well as staff…

  • Cleaning Up: How Hospital Outsourcing Is Hurting Workers and Endangering Patients , by D. Zuberi

    Open Access•Adam Seth Litwin•ARTICLE•Work and Occupations•2014•Cited by: 1

Researchers sensitive to the plight of low-wage workers in advanced industrialized economies have long sought to convey the magnitude of the problem by retelling sorrowful tales of worker exploitation.Sadly, even their most sympathetic readers have numbed to these accounts.Author Dan Zuberi has found a clever way to transcend this apathy in his new monograph based on about 100 interviews plus behind-the-scenes observations of the impact of hospit…

In this article, the authors examine the relationship between an employer's implementation of a typical dispute resolution system (DRS) and organizational justice, perceived compliance with the law, and organizational commitment. They draw on unique data from a single, geographically expansive, U.S. firm with more than 100,000 employees in more than 1,000 locations. Holding all time-constant, location-level variables in place, they find that the …

  • Technological Change at Work: The Impact of Employee Involvement on the Effectiveness of Health Information Technology

    Open Access•Adam Seth Litwin•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2011•Cited by: 11•References: 63

The link between employee involvement (EI) and organizational performance is not clear-cut, and the diffusion of information technology (IT) in the workplace complicates this relationship. The author argues that new technologies offer an important avenue by which EI can improve firm performance. He also contends that those studies that do consider EI in the context of technological change may be focusing exclusively on workplace-level features of…
