  • A financial resource curse in the context of a small developing resource-based economy: The case of Suriname

Open Access•Xanegay Huur, Syed Mansoob Murshed et al.•ARTICLE•Mineral Economics•2026

Our study explores the impact of mineral resources on financial development in Suriname via a commodity-price-shock channel. Using a Structural VAR (SVAR) model and time series data from 1980 to 2021, we find evidence of a financial resource curse. More specifically, negative commodity price shocks undermine financial development by reducing bank lending and deposits, deteriorating bank asset quality, lowering bank profitability and widening the …

  • Investigating the Effects of Economic Sanctions on Food Production in Target Countries: Evidence from Sub-Saharan Africa (1990–2022)

Open Access•Mohammed Rashad Mutawakil, Binyam Afewerk Demena et al.•ARTICLE•Peace Economics Peace Science and…•2026

This study examines the impact of economic sanctions on food production in SSA, measured by the Food Production Index (FPI). Using an unbalanced panel of SSA countries over the period 1990–2022, we employ a fixed-effects model with Driscoll–Kraay standard errors to address cross-sectional dependence, autocorrelation, and heteroskedasticity. The results reveal that both trade and financial sanctions exert negative and statistically significant eff…

  • Diversity Matters in the World of Finance: Does Ethnic and Religious Diversity Hinder Financial Development in Developing Countries

Open Access•Saqib Amin, Syed Mansoob Murshed•ARTICLE•The Developing Economies•2025

This paper investigates the relationship between ethnic and religious diversity ( ED and RD ) and financial development using the data from 102 developing countries. It is widely accepted that financial depth and the more ready availability of finance have a central role to play in fostering economic growth. We hypothesize that financial development in developing countries, especially those at the early stages of economic development, may be reta…

  • How Inequality and Repression Affect the Link Between Food Insecurity and Urban Social Disorder

Open Access•Syed Mansoob Murshed, Scott Gate et al.•ARTICLE•Peace Economics Peace Science and…•2025•References: 10

We examine the relationship between food insecurity and urban social disorder, featuring the degree of inequality and levels of governmental repression. We develop a formal theoretical model, and our empirical results suggest that food price volatility contributes significantly to conflict events as measured by the PRIO Urban Social Disorder data. We measure vertical inequality using the V-DEM egalitarian index, which is negatively significant; g…

  • The Socio-Economic Impact of an Abrupt Loss of Oil: A Synthetic Control Approach in the Case of Sudan

Open Access•Sabna Mohamed Abbass Ali, Mansoob Murshed et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Asian and African…•2025•References: 23

With the secession of South Sudan in 2011, the Republic of Sudan experienced a sudden loss of more than 70% of its oil reserves. Few countries have experienced such a dramatic macroeconomic adjustment within a short period of time. While earlier studies have explored the socio-economic impacts of oil discoveries, little is known about what happens in the case of an abrupt reversal of an oil windfall. We make use of the synthetic control method to…

  • A Meta-Analysis of the Impact of External Interventions on Conflict Intensity: Navigating Heterogeneity and Unveiling Genuine Effects

Open Access•Binyam Afewerk Demena, Azreen Anwar et al.•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2024

We investigate 833 reported estimates detailing the impact of external interventions aimed at alleviating civil war on conflict intensity. This investigation encompasses 34 studies conducted between 1996 and 2020, primarily focusing on African countries. While the average reported effect is both negative and statistically significant, our analysis reveals substantial divergence in the results. We apply meta-regression analysis to examine the sour…

  • Media Credibility and Voter Penalization of Corrupt Politicians in Latin America

Open Access•C Van Klaveren, Mansoob Murshed et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Politics and Society•2024

There has been a significant growth of social media as a means to inform oneself about politics. This article explores the consequences of this trend on the credibility audiences attribute to news exposing corrupt politicians and on their willingness to penalize the exposed politicians in elections. The study focuses on ten Latin American cities and employs a randomized control trial using experimental data embedded in a survey. Through this meth…

  • Inequality: The scourge of the twenty-first century

    Open Access•Syed Mansoob Murshed, Blas Regnault•ARTICLE•Contemporary Social Science•2023•References: 9

Rising inequality is a ubiquitous problem, encompassing every geographical region and nation in the world.Inequality can be contended to have replaced unemployment as our most vital economic issue. After nearly six decades of declining inequality from the time of the First World War, the process has reversed itself with a vengeance, and we may be about to surpass the very high levels of inequality that prevailed in 1914.The causes are multifarious…

  • International Collaboration in Times of Pandemics: An Urgent Need for Reforming our Global Financial System

Open Access•Murat Arsel, Binyam Afewerk Demena et al.•ARTICLE•Progress in Development Studies•2023•References: 1

Better, swifter and more responsive international coordination is needed within our global financial system for the containment of the pandemic and its effects. This requires better international tax coordination with a higher global minimum corporate tax, comprehensive coverage of sectors and firms, inclusion of all current tax havens and more generous redistribution of excess profits to developing nations based on user location. There also need…

  • External arms embargoes and their implications for government expenditure, democracy and internal conflict

    Open Access•Sajjad Faraji Dizaji, Syed Mansoob Murshed•ARTICLE•World Development•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 18

We examine how arms imports reductions due to external arms embargoes affect military expenditure, democratic quality and internal conflict in a sample of 48 countries from 1990 to 2017. We construct a theoretical model of arms restrictions influencing probabilities of peaceful and conflictual states via actions and efforts undertaken by the government and rebels to promote peace. We postulate that the effect of external arms embargoes on interna…

Open Access•A De Ruyter, David Hearne et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Journal of Regions…•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 21

This article explores the link between populism and governance arrangements. Adopting a comparative approach between the West Midlands and Scotland, it utilises novel primary qualitative data alongside official results and demographic statistics. Paying particular attention to the perspectives of remain-voters in “left behind” areas and how they perceive their Leave-voting counterparts, the article finds that despite divergent voting patterns bot…

  • Reformulating Jan Tinbergen’s normative vision on welfare and security

    Open Access•Syed Mansoob Murshed•ARTICLE•Journal of Peace Research•2021•References: 5

This article builds on the intellectual legacy of Jan Tinbergen by extending his analysis on welfare and security into a framework involving strategic interaction. I first incorporate welfare and security in terms of interstate tensions into a single utility or payoff function. An uncertain world is characterized by states that are more peaceful, and others where nations are more hostile to each other. Both conflictual and peaceful outcomes lie a…

  • Capitalism and Covid-19: Crisis at the Crossroads

Open Access•Syed Mansoob Murshed•ARTICLE•Peace Economics Peace Science and…•2020

Existential threats, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, have historically engendered intellectual paradigm shifts, and even systemic transformations in the economy and polity. This paper focuses on two inter-related phenomena: rising economic inequality and the diminution of liberal democracy, a feature common to both developed and developing countries set in the context of a ubiquitous and globalized capitalism. In the post-pandemic world, we need t…

  • Improving Maternal Health Care in a Post Conflict Setting: Evidence from Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh

Muhammad Badiuzzaman, Syed Mansoob Murshed et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2020

We evaluate a development programme with an important maternal health care component in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh. The region and its mostly indigenous people experienced violent conflict in the past and face a constant risk of recurring conflict. Given this fragile setting, our work differs from conventional impact evaluations by incorporating two conflict indicators: the household’s actual experience of violence and fears of futu…

  • International transfers and Dutch Disease: Evidence from South Asian countries

Md Bakhtiar Uddin, Syed Mansoob Murshed•ARTICLE•Journal of the Asia Pacific Economy•2017•References: 10

We investigate the Dutch Disease impact of migrant's remittances and foreign aid using a yearly panel data of eight South Asian countries for the period of 1975–2013. An increase in per capita remittances erodes international competitiveness by appreciating the real effective exchange rate, also leading to a fall in traded to non-traded goods production ratio in the economy; hardly any statistically significant impact of foreign aid on these vari…

  • Rentier Statebuilding in a Post-Conflict Economy: The Case of Kosovo

    Open Access•Nicolas Lemay-Hébert, Nicolas Lemay‐hébert et al.•ARTICLE•Development and Change•2016•References: 56

Kosovo has been under various forms of international administration since 1999. Although the political dimension of this international experience has been widely studied by scholars - especially those associated with the critical theory of liberal peacebuilding - the economic dimension of international rule has received less attention. This article explores the economic dimension by linking insights from rentier theory with critical approaches to…

  • Give War A Chance’: All-Out War as a Means of Ending Conflict in the Cases of Sri Lanka and Colombia

Fabio Andrés Díaz Pabón, Fabio Andres Diaz et al.•ARTICLE•Civil Wars•2013•Cited by: 2

This article investigates the military approach as a means of solving protracted civil conflicts, in particular focusing on the cases of Sri Lanka and Colombia in comparison. The approach adopted is to study the emergence of these military options within the context of each country's history and to assess whether the call for war was merely a consequence of the international ‘war on terror’, or driven by internal elements. The article explores th…

  • Population Pressure, Horizontal Inequality and Political Violence: A Disaggregated Study of Indonesian Provinces, 1990–2003

Gudrun Østby, Henrik Urdal et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2011

All parts of a country are rarely equally affected by political violence. Yet statistical studies largely fail to address sub-national conflict dynamics. We address this gap studying variations in 'routine' and 'episodic' violence between Indonesian provinces from 1990 to 2003. Within a grievance framework, the article focuses on the violence potential of resource scarcity and population pressure, as well as inter-group dynamics related to polari…

  • The Clash of Civilizations and the Interaction between Fear and Hatred

    Open Access•Syed Mansoob Murshed•ARTICLE•International Area Studies Review•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 2

This paper models conflictive interaction between a West European state and a domestic dissident immigrant Muslim minority group in terms of fear and hatred. The genesis and production of both phenomena are modelled. Identity is crucial and provides the micro-foundations of dissident Muslim behaviour by solving the collective action problem; however, complex multiple identities are possible. Hatred of the West arises both because of the economic …

  • Any Ties that Bind? Economic Diplomacy on the South Asian Subcontinent

Syed Mansoob Murshed, Hugh Ward et al.•ARTICLE•The Hague Journal of Diplomacy•2011

The ‘liberal peace’ model emphasizes the importance of commercial ties and shared norms for peaceful inter-state relations. In view of that, economic diplomacy promotes cross-border economic activities not only for direct economic gains but also for the indirect benefits of stable political relations. Ever since the creation of India and Pakistan in 1947, political relations between the two states have been tense and have witnessed six military c…

Open Access•Tony Addison, Mansoob Murshed et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Peace Research•2002•Cited by: 8•References: 8

This article analyses credibility and reputation in the context of peace negotiations. The model is applicable to the credibility of peace agreements in post-conflict situations in the immediate aftermath of civil war, where there is a danger of conflict breaking out again. The analysis is motivated by the empirical regularity with which peace agreements break down in the context of civil war, as for example in Angola, Sierra Leone and many of th…

We present two conceptually separate principal-agent models, to capture the stylised facts of multilateral and bilateral aid negotiations respectively. The first model is an application of the problem of adverse selection when there is more than one type of pr…

To explore these issues, this article presents a model of a civil war between a government and rebels…

Typologies are developed, distinguishing between the East Asian (diffuse resource-rich) and Latin American (point-sou…

Investigation into the causes of the conflict would suggest that grievance rather than greed is the main motivating force. The concept of horizontal or intergroup inequality, with both an ethnic and caste dimension, is highly relevant in explaining the Nepalese civil war. There is also a spatial aspect to the conflict, which is most intense in the m…
