Addressing social inequity in breastfeeding through proactive support
Breastfeeding is subject to social inequity with short-term education and young age being important risk factors of early breastfeeding cessation. Breastfeeding support can be offered reactively, with mothers reaching out, or proactively where a health professional or peer supporter contacts the mother. Reactive support alone may be inadequate and inequitable as individuals with the greatest needs are often less inclined to reach out. An evidence…

Looking for boundary spanners
Given that sport-for-development (SfD) requires the intentional use of sport as a tool to realize developmental goals in complex contexts, there is a need for reflexive SfD coaches who can successfully contribute to the delivery of programmes. In this study, we explore the lived experiences of SfD coaches in a selection of programmes in Flanders, Belgium. We look at their responsibilities, perceived competencies and the conditions that need to be…
Introducing Q Methodology to Program Evaluators
This method note presents Q methodology as a useful tool for evaluators to add to their practice toolbox. Q methodology, which involves both quantitative and qualitative techniques, can help researchers and evaluators systematically understand subjectivity and the communicability of opinions and perspectives. We first provide an overview of Q methodology, followed by a brief summary of how evaluators are using Q, and an explanation of the steps f…

How and why does Local Area Coordination work for people in different contexts
The increasing adoption of Local Area Coordination across the United Kingdom as a strengths-based approach to acting on inequalities which impact on individual health and well-being, and reducing reliance and avoidable use of health and social care services, has catalysed increasing calls for evidence to justify economic commitment. In a time of austerity where extreme pressure is on resources to prove short-term outputs, Pawson and Tilley's real…

Mobilising Q methodology within a realist evaluation
Realist evaluation and Q methodology are established approaches in social science. However, integration of Q methodology within a realist evaluation is scarce. This article attempts to illustrate (through a recent evaluation) how Q methodology can support a realist evaluation. The article attempts to capture the philosophical compatibility of the two approaches creating an argument for Q’s integration within realist evaluation. Through the case s…
Education and Knowledge
In this book, first published in 1979, Kevin Harris explores the idea that in capitalist liberal democracies formal education functions essentially not to reveal reality, but rather to transmit to each new generation a structured misrepresentation of reality. In defence of this controversial and thought-provoking view, the author argues that all knowledge of the world is theory-laden and that a neutral, detached, objective description of the worl…
Ripples from a Passing Ship
This paper outlines aspects and dimensions of my ‘relationship’ with Richard Peters from 1966 onward. The underlying suggestion is that, while Peters’ contribution to philosophy of education was undeniably of major proportions, both that contribution and his legacy are institutional rather than substantive

Mill, the State, and Local Management of Schooling
Contemporary educational policy is centrally concerned with local management of schooling; a practice apparently supported by and following easily from John Stuart Mill's views on liberty and representative government. This paper argues that contemporary practices of local management of schooling are conservative rather than empowering, and that Mill's actual proposals result in an unresolvable paradox in this area. It is then argued that if the …
On the Determination of Values
F. R. Leavis argued that literary studies could provide an incomparable initiation into tradition and cultural continuity and a true liberal education by educating people intellectually, emotionally and morally. This paper examines Leavis's arguments regarding literary criticism's propensity to provide a test for life and values. It also examines the value system within which Leavis operates; and the relations postulated between literary studies,…

The Image and the Vote
It is generally assumed that a political candidate's appearance and style have an impact on voters and the choices they make on -election day. Little research, however, has been done to investigate this claim. Here, the authors examine the role that these nonverbal aspects of candidate presentation play in the process of political communication. In the course of two related studies, the impact of candidate photographs appearing on campaign flyers…
