Historical trends in the degree of federal income tax progressivity in the United States
This study examines how the degree of progressivity of the U.S. Federal income tax evolved between 1929 and 2009. Data from the Internal Revenue Service, U.S. Census Bureau, and Bureau of Economic Analysis is used to construct annual tax concentration curves and income concentration curves. Numerical values of four tax progressivity indices are determined. These values suggests that: (i) the degree of progressivity has varied greatly over time, (…
The Interdependence Between Homeland Security Efforts of a State and a Terrorist’s Choice of Attack
Consider a state that chooses security levels at two sites (Targets A and B), after which a terrorist chooses which site to attack (and potentially a scope of attack). The state values A more highly. If the state knows which target the terrorist values more highly, he will choose a higher level of security at this site. Under complete information, if the terrorist’s only choice is which site to attack, the state will set security levels for which…
Tradition, Translation, Trauma
This book is concerned with how Classic texts — mainly Greek and Latin but also Arabic and Portuguese — become present in later cultures and how they resonate in the modern. This book examines the topic in different ways. Some discuss singular encounters with the Classic — those of Heaney, Pope, Fellini, Freud, IbnQutayba, Cavafy and others — and show how translations engage with the affective impact of texts over time and space. Chapters offer i…
An Avant-garde for Today
This essay is concerned with the power of art to effect change, but also to show attachments to existing ways of understanding. Avant-garde art from Cubism to Surrealism seeks to transform the shapes in which we see the world. But change may simply create blindness to the past, and to what is, and to the way our chains are yanked by the lures of domination whether economic, social or emotional. Kundera's novelistic meditation on the canonical and…
Touch, Translation, Witness in Alberto Giacometti, La Main , Le Nez
In the period from the late 1930s to the late 1940s, spanning the Second World War, Giacometti embarks on his attempts to represent the human form. He discovers his inability to locate the human form in space. How then can human experience be witnessed? What is at stake in transposing, translating one experience into another? Aesthetic concerns activate moral ones by failing to occupy the same place. This creates an experience of responsibility w…
