The aim of this article is to discuss the thesis that we live today in a society and historical moment that is losing the meaning of sacrifice, that is, the relevant links that unite—with regard to the theme of the meat diet and the prior killing of the animal for food—man and animals, man and other men through the animal, the animal with other animals through man, with the necessary inclusion of the cultural context, on the one hand, and of divi…
Introduction to the Semiotics of the Text
This books aims to demonstrate how semiotic models of textual analysis can be used to study any social reality or cultural process. In addition, it shows how semiotic models work by using examples from everyday life and social praxis, communicative processes and modes of consumption, online interactions and cross-media procedures, political experiences and scientific universes.
Aventures de la serviette. Pour une sémiotique des manières de table
Culture and politics of laziness, from fairy tales to Oblomov and Bartleby
The thesis of this paper is that laziness is not a psychological property of an individual subject but a collective sentiment: it is a reaction, or perhaps even a rebellion, against those who lock us within a culture that sees activity as a supreme value, often as an end in itself. Laziness is the response to those who force us to do and overdo, to give ourselves over to our occupations with zeal and constancy, total dedication and blind persever…
How to read a recipe
Writing a recipe is no easy task. It requires great care to render those various steps clearly, placing them in order, explaining the reasons for their importance in achieving the final result. However, over time the technique for writing a recipe, and consequently for composing an entire recipe book, has not just been perfected, but has reached fairly stable standards that, when reproduced, make teaching others to cook using the written word a f…
Semiotics of Animals in Culture
Post-Greimassian semiotics has worked toward a return to phenomenology, with the aim of studying the sensorial dimension and the body. Most of this research, however, has all but forgotten Greimas’s last book, De imperfection (1987), in which he proposes an original version of Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy with the notion of the aesthetic grasp . I propose to reconsider this almost abandoned notion, both from a theoretical point of view (a new versi…
Food meaning
Considering as a starting point Greimas's last work (De l'imperfection), taken into very little consideration by later semiotic research, I would like to see whether it would be possible to make, in the field of taste, the distinction that Greimas did in the visual field: between a "figurative" taste (that I should call tasty) and a "plastic" taste (that I should call flavorful). Much has been discussed about the synesthetic nature of gustatory s…
Toxic substances, semiotic forms
The aim of this article is to discuss the relationship between experiences with drugs and musical/visual experiences using a socio-semiotic theoretical framework. In recent collective research still underway, this topic is already being explored in many directions: first, by showing how sensorial alterations caused by drugs are ‘translated’ into different texts of pop culture, such as songs, video clips, movies, etc.; second, by reconstructing th…
