School Renewal and School Well-Being: A Case Study
In this longitudinal case study, we examined school well-being during the change process. We operationalized the change process as the school renewal model and viewed school well-being from the perspective of the PERMA (positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment) model. We found that all elements of the PERMA model were manifested in the school renewal process and that the school renewal process was not dominated sol…
Leadership in school renewal: Examining consistency across orientation, principles and implementation
Purpose There has been a strong emphasis on leadership in school renewal (SR) to promote educational improvement. The literature discerns three major aspects of leadership in SR (orientation to SR, SR principles and practices (PP) and implementation fidelity and integrity). As a methodological advancement for the field of educational administration, we introduced a general analytical framework to measure the consistency of the three major aspects…
The Relationship Between Principal Leadership and Student Achievement: A Multivariate Meta-Analysis with an Emphasis on Conceptual Models and Methodological Approaches
Principal leadership has been widely regarded as a powerful catalyst for school improvement and student learning. This article presents a multivariate meta-analysis of 42 empirical studies, published between 2000 and 2020, that examined the effects of principal leadership on student achievement in the United States. The focus is on the conceptual models and methodological approaches used to examine these effects. Our study reveals three major fin…
The Effect of Ecological Environment on Language-Minority Students’ Math and Reading Development: A Hierarchical Linear Analysis of a Longitudinal Study

The association between teacher-to-teacher relationships and student achievement: A meta-analysis
In this meta-analysis, we investigated the association between teacher-to-teacher relationships and student achievement. We specifically explicated (a) the association between a teacher's individual relationship with other teachers and student achievement; (b) the association between teacher-to-teacher relationships at the organisational level (i.e. school or grade team) and student achievement; and (c) how three frequently used theoretical frame…
Effects of the “High Impact Leadership for School Renewal” Project on Principal Leadership, School Leadership, and Student Achievement
In this study, we designed an educational experiment to evaluate the High Impact Leadership for School Renewal project’s impact on principal leadership, school leadership, and student achievement. Principals in the experimental group reported statistically significantly greater improvement in principal leadership than their counterparts in the control group (Hedge’s g of 0.73), but teachers in the experimental and control groups showed no differe…
The relationship between reciprocal school-to-school collaboration and student academic achievement
Despite the appeal of promoting and forming collaborative relationships between schools, empirical evidence for an association between school-to-school collaboration and school outcomes is still somewhat lacking. This study utilized data from 76 schools nested within 56 districts in the United States to examine the association between a school's reciprocal relationships and school outcomes by employing social network analysis and hierarchical lin…
Integrating formal and informal subsystems: A case study of Promise City’s early care and education model
This case study explores effective practices within a district’s early care and education model. Interviews were conducted with eight parents of high-performing students and seven district ECE partners from Promise City. A Comparison Between U.S. and Chinese Principal Decision-Making Power: A Measurement Perspective Based on Pisa 2015
Successful school leadership is highly contextually dependent. However, few studies focused on the comparisons of school leadership across different countries. Even among the existing studies, comparisons tend to be conducted with the assumption that the underlying factorial structure of the construct is the same. In this study, school principal’s decision-making power in 12 decision-making areas from the PISA database are compared between China …
School Autonomy: A Comparison between China and the United States
This study examined and compared school autonomy in China and the United States. Based on the international PISA 2012 school data, the authors examined three aspects of school autonomy. We found that in comparison with the United States, (1) principals from China were less likely to have responsibility over eleven school decisions (hiring teachers, firing teachers, salary increase, budget formulation, budget allocation, disciplinary policies, ass…
