Ferdinand Hillers Jugendsymphonie in e-Moll
This brief article discusses the genesis and identification of Ferdinand Hiller’s Youth Symphony in E minor. In contrast to previous research, it is argued that the “third” Symphony in E minor (September 1831) is not a completely new work, but a heavily revised new version of the Symphony in E minor (September 23, 1829). This hypothesis can be substantiated with Hiller’s entries in his own handwritten catalogue of works as well as autographs or c…

Beethovens „höhere Menschen“
This article investigates Beethoven’s term höhere Menschen (intellectual elite) from a historical and social perspective. The goal is to make Beethoven’s self-positioning and claims to distinction comprehensible within the historical and social conditions at that time. While Beethoven rejected the feudalistic principle of inborn status and supplanted it with the Enlightenment’s principal of equality, he nevertheless made elite claims to distincti…

‘European music’ outside Europe? Musical entangling and intercrossing in the case of Korea’s modern history 1
Jin-Ah Kim, in discussing the question of musical relationships West–East, critically considers the notions of ‘entanglement,’ ‘shared history,’ or ‘histoire croisée.’ Her narration of the musical history of Korea in its own diversity leads to a wide-ranging conclusion, which emphasises the need to understand history ‘from the inside’ of cultures and these cultures themselves as ‘processes’ rather than fixed constellations
Jeonse, will it be extinguished? Differentiation of Korean rental housing market
