Rewilding the Critical-Constructive Bildung Tradition with Nature as Co-Teacher
Modern Western education has been criticised for its human-centred orientation and for legitimising the exploitation of nature, thereby contributing to the environmental crisis. This article responds by rethinking a specific Northern European strand of the Bildung tradition, namely the modern critical-constructive approach associated with Humboldt and Klafki, as a pedagogical framework concerned with how teaching and educational practices could a…
Young People Speculating with and About Hope Through a Life-Friendly Cli-Fi Roleplaying Game
The signals and consequences of, and currently overall eco-socio-cultural inadequate responses to, the pressing climate and biodiversity crises of the Anthropocene foster a landscape of repression, hopelessness and anxiety among many, not least young people. As young people today seem to primarily encounter dystopian future narratives, this article tells a story about how playing an open-ended, solarpunk, character-driven cli-fi tabletop roleplay…

Wilding Pedagogy With Nature Writings, Propositions and Minor Experiences
This article explores strategies for rewilding pedagogy through three life-opening arts-based educational practices: nature writing, propositions, and minor experiences. Drawing on wild pedagogies, diverse perspectives on life, and various approaches to arts education, we examine how these practices can be twisted to promote life-friendly education, in support of more-than-human life, disrupting life-forgetful educational and societal norms. By r…
Mundification
Today, there is a tendency within the field of environmental education to argue that the current global metacrisis is intrinsically linked to idealist traditions in philosophy and culture. The underlying intuition appears to be that idealism ultimately relies on a Cartesian distinction between mind and body: that it privileges the mind while neglecting the body, thereby enabling a view of materiality – or “nature” – as something to be used or exp…
Playing with disaster, moving toward change
The paper presents the theoretical framework for the use of role-playing games (RPG) to foster and motivate ecoliteracy. First, we discuss previous work on the uses of RPGs in relation to environmental education. Then we introduce the practice theoretical perspective grounding our approach. This is followed by a brief consideration of theories of motivation, as we seek to leverage this drive through playful and co-creative processes via the use o…

Pedagogy in the Anthropocene
Rethinking Education in Light of Global Challenges
Rethinking Education in Light of Global Challenges discusses challenges to education in Scandinavian welfare states due to global trends like migration, neoliberal strategies, and the exploitation of nature. This anthology comprises case studies, theoretical articles, and reflective studies, grouped under the headings of Culture, Society, and the Anthropocene.
Rethinking Education in Light of Global Challenges
Cautiousness as a new pedagogical ideal in the Anthropocene
In this chapter, it is proposed that we live today in a new era, called the Anthropocene, and also that contemporary educational thought does not sufficiently take account of this. Instead, education is understood as situated first of all as taking place in a late-modern, purely human-made society, and thus not in a wider biosphere, as is addressed by the Anthropocene concept. The chapter works out an alternative to such Earth-forgetfulness throu…
Implications of Combined Exposure to Household Air Pollution and HIV on Neurocognition in Children
Air pollution exposure and HIV infection can each cause neurocognitive insult in children. The purpose of this study was to test whether children with combined high air pollution exposure and perinatal HIV infection have even greater risk of neurocognitive impairment. This was a cross-sectional study of HIV-uninfected unexposed (HUU) and HIV-infected children and their caregivers in Nairobi, Kenya. We used a detailed neuropsychological battery to…
Luhmann and the media
Welcome to MedieKultur! This special issue is dedicated to the media theory of German sociologist and systems theorist Niklas Luhmann. We begin this introduction with an overview of his theory and end it with a brief presentation of the articles included in this issue, which utilise the theory in many different ways, and try to use it to conceptualise and understand many different phenomena
Om den uformelle (mis)brug af medier i det formelle uddannelsessystem [The non-formal (mis)use of media in formal education]
A combination of educational research and theory of media is applied in order to understand the use of new digital media among Danish high school students. By analyzing interviews with students and teachers the authors present an interpretation of the students' media use and its consequences. One of the main results is that the use of the new media leads to problems of inattentiveness and lack of concentration related to different forms of media-…
