  • Techno-pedagogic discourse and the online learning assetization regime

    Open Access•David F Ayers•ARTICLE•Higher Education•2025

Research on academic capitalism has critiqued the commodification of knowledge, but it has not critiqued assetization. The difference between commodification and assetization is more than a technical distinction. Extracting value from assets requires a different regime of coordination than what is required for extracting value from commodities. Through an analysis of 132 texts related to the online course review process at 16 research universitie…

    David F Ayers, Allison L Palmadessa•ARTICLE•The Journal of Higher Education•2015•References: 44

Through an analysis of245 issues of the Community College Journal published between 1950 and 2013, we show how three discourses—international understanding and geopolitics, economic competitiveness, and global citizenship—informed practical reasoning about a rising global imaginary and its implications for the community college. By demonstrating shifts in practical reasoning among policy actors, we illuminate at least in part the ideological natu…

Textual prominence, collocation analysis, and concordance analysis suggest that the community college shifted from a commitment …

  • When managerialism meets professional autonomy

    David F Ayers•ARTICLE•Culture and Organization•2012•References: 8

Through analysis of 178 texts posted online by university leaders during a severe budget shortfall, I explore the tensions that arise as managerialist practices are recontextualized within university governance. I identify 64 texts constitutive of a hybrid genre, which I call the ‘budget update’. The structure and linguistic features of this genre are described. Interdiscursive and intertextual analysis demonstrate hybridities that emerge when le…

  • A Critical Realist Orientation to Learner Needs

    Open Access•David F Ayers•ARTICLE•Adult Education Quarterly•2010•References: 9

The objective of this essay is to propose critical realism as a philosophical middle way between two sets of ontological, epistemological, and methodological assumptions regarding learner needs. Key concepts of critical realism, a tradition in the philosophy of science, are introduced and applied toward an analysis of learner needs, resulting in novel ontological and epistemological assertions about learner needs. Retroduction is offered as a met…

    David F Ayers, David Carlone•ARTICLE•International Journal of Lifelong…•2007•Cited by: 3•References: 16

The purpose of conducting this study was to understand how neoliberal discourses manifest within the local context of a short‐term, job‐training program offered at a two‐year college in the USA. Ethnographic data were collected at the local site through interviews, observations and document analysis. We then situated these data within a global context represented by a corpus of purposively selected national and international policy texts. Focusin…
