Anti-Intellectualism and Political Ideology in a Sample of Undergraduate and Graduate Students 1
To estimate correlations for scores on a student anti-intellectualism scale with scores on a measure of political conservatism, 235 students were given a survey containing a student anti-intellectualism scale, a political conservatism scale, and a demographics questionnaire identifying the participants' sex, college classification, ethnicity, political party affiliation, and self-described political ideology. The political conservatism scale cont…

Hotline in China
Due to lack of sufficient professional counselors and psychologists, telephone hotlines were established as a way to reach Chinese people
Purpose in Life, Boredom, and Volunteerism in a Group of Retirees
In a pilot study of 40 retirees, those who volunteered more than 10 hours per week scored significantly higher on the Purpose In Life test than those who volunteered 10 or fewer hours per week. A significant negative correlation of -.75 was obtained between scores on purpose in life and boredom proneness
Attitudes of Traditional and Nontraditional Students toward Their Classmates of Various Ages
430 Cameron University students indicated the extent to which they agreed with 20 statements concerning attitudes toward older and younger students. A principal components factor analysis with varimax rotation indicated three underlying dimensions with statements favoring (1) younger students, (2) age diversity, and (3) older students. A 2 (traditional vs nontraditional students) × 2 (sex) between-subjects multivariate analysis of variance was pe…
A Case Study
Alopecia areata, a common cause of hair loss, is generally considered the consequence of an autoimmune process. Both physiological and psychological factors have been implicated. Previous studies have not incorporated behavior modification in their treatment designs. In this study, three treatment techniques (hair massage, relaxation procedures, and monetary reward) were applied to a 16-year-old male with a five-year history of alopecia areata. C…
Classical Conditioning with Suitable Controls in the Classroom
Classical salivary conditioning was demonstrated in a classroom setting with the use of experimental control procedures to ensure an actual CR was being displayed and not pseudoconditioning. The significant increase in salivation in the forward conditioning group compared to that of the backward-paired group indicates this method can be used to condition salivation classically in the classroom
Birth Order and past-Orientation
Three studies examined Adler's suggestion that firstborns are past-oriented. The first study of the relationship between birthorder and temporal relatedness and dominance in 37 female undergraduates yielded no significant differences. The second one compared the proportions of firstborns among 68 faculty members, majors, and non-majors in history, expecting a decrease in frequency with decreasing commitment, as was partially confirmed. Study 3 of…
Positive and Negative Incentive Contrast Effects with Rats as a Function of Sex
Experiment 1 attempted to determine if sex was a controlling factor in the production of negative contrast. The Ss were 60 male and female albino rats 68-104 days of age. In an operant conditioning chamber a saccharine solution was reduced in concentration from 1.2% to. 10% for both males and females. Only the males displayed the downward incentive effect. Experiment 2 attempted to discover if sex was a determiner of positive contrast in 60 male …
Negative and Positive Incentive Contrast Effects with Saccharine versus Sucrose
Forty male white rats received 19 sessions of bar press training with sucrose (16% or 4%) as reward followed by a shift from 4% to 16% and from 16% to 4%. Three dependent measures indicated positive and negative contrast effects. In Experiment II, 70 male white rats received 14 sessions of bar press training with (1.2%, 1%, .10%, or .01%) saccharine, and water followed by a shift from 1.2% to. 10%, 1.2% to .01%, 1 to .1%, and .10% to .01%. Three …
Positive Incentive Contrast as a Function of Age and Length of Training in Rats
Exp. I demonstrated that positive incentive contrast effects in an operant conditioning chamber produced by an increase in the concentration of a saccharine solution in 30 180-day-old rats (older animals) are not found in 30 25-day-old rats (younger rats). Exp. II indicated that the probability of obtaining positive contrast with 60 male albino rats is a positive function of the length of the preshift period
