Influence of Participative Decision-Making on Job Satisfaction and Organizational Commitment of School Principals
163 school administrators were surveyed to examine the relationships among participative decision-making, over-all job satisfaction, facet job satisfaction, and organizational commitment. All associations among these variables were positive, significant, and meaningful. The findings were discussed in light of recent organizational practices toward a more decentralized management approach, characterized by empowerment of lower-level employees and …
Achievement of Work Values and Participative Decision-Making
The relationship between values realized in the workplace and participative decision-making was investigated for a sample of 171 nurses. The results indicated that all of the examined work values related significantly to scores on participative decision-making. Regression analyses showed that five of the values contributed 63% to the variance in decision-making: Influence over Work, Independence in Work, Influence in the Organization, Convenient …
Job Involvement
The relationship of seven personal and seven job factors on job involvement were examined for a sample of 926 secondary school teachers. Multiple regression analyses gave no personal predictors but four job predictors (job satisfaction, job motivation, participation in decision making, and satisfaction with supervision) which together accounted for 28% of the variance in job involvement. When grouped, the relationships did not change: job-related…
Does Task Structure Moderate the Relationship of Leaders' Behavior and Employees' Satisfaction
This study investigated the moderator effect of various task dimensions on the form of the relationship between leaders' behavior and employees' satisfaction with supervision and with the jobs, as postulated by path-goal theory of leadership. Data were collected from five groups of educators: 978 public school teachers, 976 high school teachers, 186 community college instructors, 191 university professors, and 188 student teachers. Instruments in…
A Test of Path-Goal Theory
The influence of work values on the relationship between leaders' behavior and subordinates' satisfaction was investigated for a sample of college and university instructors ( N = 363). Based on path-goal theory of leadership, it was hypothesized that (a) subordinates who are people-oriented would see considerate, but not structured, leader's behavior as a source of satisfaction and (b) subordinates who have self-expressive value orientations wou…
Locus of Control as Moderator between Job Characteristics and Job Attitudes
The importance of locus of control as moderator between job characteristics and job attitudes was investigated. Rotter's I-E Scale, Hackman and Oldham's Job Diagnostic Survey, and several work-outcome measures were administered to a sample of 1,812 teachers. The results showed that internally scoring subjects ( N = 702) perceived their jobs to be more enriched (in terms of five core-job dimensions) and held more positive attitudes (job satisfacti…
