  • Teaching medical students a clinical approach to altered mental status

Open Access•Jeremy Sperling, Jeremy D Sperling et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Education Online•2013

Students who participated in a simulation exercise performed better on a knowledge-based test and reported increased comfort and perceived competence in their clinical approach to AMS. SBME shows significant promise for teaching clinical skills to medical students during pre-clinical curriculum

  • Standardized patient outcomes trial (SPOT) in neurology

Open Access•Joseph E Safdieh, Andrew Lin et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Education Online•2011

SP sessions are an effective tool for teaching the neurologic examination. We determined that a single, structured SP session conducted as an adjunct to our traditional lectures and small groups is associated with a statistically significant improvement in student performance measured 2 years after the session

  • Pilot of Direct Observation of Clinical Skills (Docs) in a Medicine Clerkship

Open Access•Yoon Kang, Charles L Bardes et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Education Online•2009

These data support the feasibility of the DOCS session for formative assessment of student interviewing, physical examination, and oral case presentation skills during a medicine clerkship. Observer ratings from DOCS physical examination and case presentation sections were found to be predictors of final clerkship grade
