Rural doctor quota students in Germany – who are they? Data on first year students from two cohorts in the federal state of Saxony
The lack of physicians in rural areas is a universal problem. To increase the attractiveness of rural practice for medical students, the contribution of medical schools is undisputed. However, much of the evidence on interventions before and during undergraduate education comes from countries with large areas and low population density like Australia and Canada. In Germany, selective admission to medical studies for students who agree to become r…
Management and treatment of long Covid symptoms in general practices
Independent from initial severity, many patients develop persistent symptoms after infection with SARS-CoV-2, described as long COVID syndrome. Most of these patients are treated by general practitioners (GPs). As evidence-based treatment recommendations are still sparse, GPs must make their therapy decisions under uncertainty. We investigated (1) the most frequently observed long COVID symptoms in general practices and (2) GPs' applied treatment…
What Comes after the Trial? An Observational Study of the Real-World Uptake of an E-Mental Health Intervention by General Practitioners to Reduce Depressive Symptoms in Their Patients
Unguided and free e-mental health platforms can offer a viable treatment and self-help option for depression. This study aims to investigate, from a public health perspective, the real-world uptake, benefits, barriers, and implementation support needed by general practitioners (GPs). The study presents data from a spin-off GP survey conducted 2.5 years subsequent to a cluster-randomized trial. A total of N = 68 GPs (intervention group (IG) GPs = …
Long-term mentoring relationships in undergraduate longitudinal general practice tracks – a qualitative study on the perspective of students and general practitioners
With this study, we gained detailed insights into and understanding of the nature of long-term relationships between students and mentors. Points for improvement revealed included: 1) education of both participating groups on the goals and benefits of mentoring, including binding expectations for the participants; 2) intensified support and training of teaching physicians; 3) structured and accompanied establishment of initial contact between men…
Medical students’ adoption and evaluation of a completely digital general practice clerkship – cross-sectional survey and cohort comparison with face-to-face teaching
Students welcomed the digital content and perceived relevant learning gain. Our results may help to develop future blended learning concepts. Clinical cases, examination videos and visual diagnoses appear to be particularly suitable as useful online complements which could enrich face-to-face teaching. As students especially valued the exclusive time for exchanges with their preceptor, this should be facilitated in face-to-face clerkships
