  • Robert H. Terrell and the Sources of Black Conservatism

    Open Access•Kevin J Harrelson•ARTICLE•Philosophy Compass•2026

Black conservatism is often deemed a counterintuitive philosophy because it requires confidence in institutions and traditions that have not benefited Black people. In its classic moment within the American context, the movement centered on a combination of American exceptionalism and specific ideas about racial progress. This article traces some of the academic sources of one formulation of Black conservatism from the age of Booker T. Washington…

  • Racial Fraud and the American Binary

    Open Access•Kevin J Harrelson•ARTICLE•Eidos A Journal for Philosophy of…•2022•References: 9

In response to recent controversies about racial transitioning, I provide an argument that deceptions about ancestry may sometimes constitute fraud. In order to arrive at this conclusion, I criticize the arguments from analogy made famous by Rebecca Tuvel and Christine Overall. My claim is that we should not think of racial transitioning as similar to gender transitioning, because different identity groups possess different kinds of obstacles to …

  • White Racial Literacy and Racial Dexterity

    Open Access•Kevin J Harrelson•ARTICLE•Educational Theory•2021

This essay presents racial literacy and racial dexterity as educational desiderata, especially for white students. Racial literacy is defined as the ability to recognize and interpret racial nuances in real social engagements. Racial dexterity is defined as the ability to engage successfully with diverse racial contexts. After defining racial literacy and racial dexterity, Kevin Harrelson analyzes these skills by contrasting them with racial naiv…

  • Intention and empathy

    Kevin J Harrelson, Kevin Harrelson•ARTICLE•Philosophical Psychology•2020

This essay challenges some assumptions of prevalent theories of empathy. The empathizer, according to these theories, must have an emotion or a representation that matches the recipient’s emotion or representation. I argue that these conditions fail to account for important cases, namely surrogate and out-group empathy. In the course of this argument, I isolate some conceptual difficulties in extant models of cognitive empathy. In place of the ma…

  • Hegel in the Americas

    Open Access•Kevin J Harrelson, Kevin Harrelson•ARTICLE•Revista Eletrônica Estudos…•2019

This essay criticizes some strategies of Hegel scholarship, especially the non-metaphysical school and its recent metaphysical successor. My main claim is that these approaches are rhetorically opaque, and thus vulnerable to a certain anticolonial argument. In place of these strategies, I recommend and illustrate a more historically perspicuous approach that is sensitive to concerns about the role of European philosophy in the Americas.
