Various aspects of university of the masses seem to inspire controversial debates. How can we explain, for example, that undergraduates, in spite of a regular attendance, are unsufficiently implied intellectually in courses they attend without being really under constraint ? Why do the majority of students who resort to tutorate are not essentially those whom it was first set up for ? To throw light on such paradoxes it is necessary to observe how work - beyond objective statements and formal devices - the actors, students and teachers trying to adapt to each other so as to maintain a delicate balance due to this massive expansion
