A segmentation typology of young males is developed. This typology is based on the lifestyle traits that prior research suggests are linked to drinking-driving behaviors. Implications of this lifestyle analysis for those managing campaigns against drinking and driving are discussed. T he joint misuse of two consumer products, alco-holic beverages and automobiles, leads to thou-sands of tragedies every year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports 23,500 deaths resulting from alcohol-related traffic accidents in 1984 (NHTSA 1986); preliminary 1985 estimates are 22,354 deaths. Attempts to control the drinking-driving problem include mass media campaigns prepared by organizations ranging from NHTSA to activist groups like Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
